More information about her and her work can be found on her website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penelopeumbrico.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.<b>penelopeumbrico<\/b>.net\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div><i>As Is<\/i>\u00a0featured a series of work called &#8220;Broken Sets (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EBay\">EBay<\/a>)&#8221; (2009\u20132010), which consisted of images of broken <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LCD_television\">LCD television<\/a> screens that were acquiesced from pictures posted by eBay sellers trying to sell damaged television sets for parts.<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penelope_Umbrico#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Her project &#8220;Suns from Flickr &#8221; started in 2006 when she found 541,795 pictures of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sunsets\">Sunsets<\/a> searching the word \u201csunset\u201d on the photo-sharing web site <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flickr\">Flickr<\/a> while looking for the most photographed subject (which the sunset turned out to be). She took just the suns from these pictures and made <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kodak\">Kodak<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snapshot_%28photography%29\">snapshot<\/a> prints of them.<\/p>\n<p>Umbrico has participated in numerous group exhibitions including those at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MoMA_PS1\">MoMA PS1<\/a>, NY; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MassMoCA\">MassMoCA<\/a>, MA; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Museum_of_Modern_Art\">San Francisco Museum of Modern Art<\/a>, CA; The Pingyao International Photography Festival, China; The Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, Germany; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Modern_Art\">Museum of Modern Art<\/a>, NY; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gallery_of_Modern_Art\">Gallery of Modern Art<\/a>, Brisbane Australia; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carpenter_Center_for_the_Visual_Arts\">Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts<\/a>, Cambridge; Center for Curatorial Studies at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bard_College\">Bard College<\/a>, NY; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Center_of_Photography\">International Center of Photography<\/a>, NY, among others. Her work is in the collections of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Modern_Art\">Museum of Modern Art<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Center_of_Photography\">International Center of Photography<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Contemporary_Photography\">Museum of Contemporary Photography<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Museum_of_Modern_Art\">San Francisco Museum of Modern Art<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tampa_Museum_of_Art\">Tampa Museum of Art<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Metropolitan_Museum_of_Art\">The Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>Her work has recently been featured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times_Magazine\">New York Times Magazine<\/a>, on the cover and inside spreads accompanying &#8220;Ghosts In the Machine&#8221;, including &#8220;Cyberspace When You&#8217;re Dead&#8221;, on January 9, 2011.<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penelope_Umbrico#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a> In March 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_in_America\">Art in America<\/a> featured Umbrico&#8217;s work on the cover and inside along with a short essay by the artist.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/art.ccny.cuny.edu\/diap\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/penelope.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1846\" src=\"https:\/\/art.ccny.cuny.edu\/diap\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/penelope-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"Penelope Umbrico\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/art.ccny.cuny.edu\/diap\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/penelope-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/art.ccny.cuny.edu\/diap\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/penelope-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/art.ccny.cuny.edu\/diap\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/penelope.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Penelope Umbrico will be speaking Thursday 04\/04\/13 at 5:00PM in Shepard Hall 408.
