The Art Education program at City College of New York prepares students to be reflective artist-educators who can teach in multiple settings, including schools, community centers, museums, and alternative learning sites. Students gain a critical understanding of the social significance of art education as they develop the skills to actively contribute to the field through their creative and academic work.
Visit the MA in Art Education website to learn more about the program.
CCNY offers three graduate level programs in Art Education. Visit CCNY’s Art Education Program Website for additional information, course descriptions, admissions information, and program updates.
Initial Certification: For students without certification, this program leads to an MA in Art Education and Initial Certification to teach Visual Arts (Preschool-12th grade) New York State. This program is also appropriate for anyone interested in teaching in community centers, museums, or other spaces for learning.
Professional Certification: For students who have previously earned New York State Certification and are interested in deepening their understanding of art education. This program leads to an MA in Art Education and New York State Professional Certification in Visual Arts (Preschool-12). This program is also appropriate for those interested in expanding their ability to teach in settings beyond schools.
Non-Certification: For students interested in teaching outside of schools (museums, community centers, etc.) as teaching artists or arts education administrators, this program leads to a MA in Art Education without certification.
