DIAP and Art in Odd Places NYC 2014

Kara J. Schmidt, DIAP Alumni participated with Defracturing

DEFRACTURING is a durational performance in which the sidewalk cracks of 14th Street are “repaired” using visual sutures. In an act of poetic intervention, Schmidt seeks to interrupt pedestrians’ consciousness of public space by suggesting that urban spaces are a type of “body” which requires care and solicitude.

Ben Retig and Marianna de Nadal, 2nd year DIAP MFA Program, participated with Incoming Call

Incoming Call is a public intervention in which payphones along 14th Street ring when a tweet about 14th Street is made. Payphones will ring as they used to do many years ago, before regulations to disable incoming calls were made in the 90s. As new technologies have developed, and the use of payphones declined, Incoming Call creates a link between the virtual and the physical, the old and the new, as a reflection on transformations in the public landscape.
